The medieval Univ monastery is a valuable historical and cultural monument
of Orthodox Christianity in Ukraine. It existed and developed
in difficult conditions within the several state formations that greatly
impacted material and spiritual culture. The preserved written information
about the monastery is fragmentary, which enhances the importance
of archaeological research of the monastery. Among the many
archaeological sites of the monastery of the Neo-Modern Period, slab
grave burials, various types of fortifications, and other defensive structures
took a special place. These objects became the topic of our research.
The importance of carrying out archaeological explorations is caused
by the fact that in the Neo-Modern Period, many historical monuments
were destroyed due to the dominance of new trends in social development.
At that time, in the process of social evolution under the influence
of the implementation of reforms, complex processes of unification
of monastic life took place, including the introduction of new crafts,
economic activities, the expansion of religious, cultural, educational,
and other activities of monasticism. The study of the funerary sites of
the Univ monastery showed a certain diversity, which generally reflected
the traditions existing in Ukrainian Orthodoxy. The funerary slabs
with epitaphs can be distinguished as a separate group of monuments.
They became the most valuable historic source, providing rich research
material. The results of the excavations of the monastery entrance gate
and defensive fortifications give important scientific information about
the characteristic features and peculiarities of defensive engineering. |
